The rapid increase in the amount of electronic waste (computers, cell phones, etc.) will result in serious health and environmental problems in developing countries, if not quickly taken recycling - the United Nations warned on Monday. "Sales of electronic products in countries such as China and India, and on the African continent and South American have increased dramatically over the next ten years" - the report predicts Nations Environment Program (UNEP), published before the meetings of experts on the environment in Bali. "If there is no policy initiated in the collection and recycling of this equipment in many countries created mountains of hazardous electronic waste, which will have serious repercussions for the environment and public health" - warns document. Amount of electronic waste associated with the same computers is expected to grow by 500 percent. in India and about 200-400 percent. in South Africa and China compared to 2007, they also will be a lot more through mobile phones, televisions, refrigerators, etc. China alone already produces around 2.3 million tons of electronic waste per year, and ahead of them in this respect only the United States (3 million). A significant part of this waste is not properly processed and burned - the UNEP said. On Monday and Tuesday is the Bali meeting of experts of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of hazardous waste. |
